Ups and downs in loan life for Norwich City exports

Norwich City Loan Manager Andrew Hughes currently has 16 players to watch and coach, having succeeded Neil Adams in that role earlier this season.

Promotion hopes, relegation worries, injury frustration and Covid-19 worries are all on the table as lenders try to improve their career prospects after being cleared from the Canaries .

Josip Drmic – Rijeka

Applications: 21

Goals: 16

Frozen after relegation from the Premier League in 2020, Drmic got his career back on track in Croatia with seven goals in 18 games. The 29-year-old Switzerland international is back in Rijeka for the final year of his Canary Islands contract and has played a prolific role in a competitive title race with Dinamo Zagreb and Osijek, also helping secure a cup semi-final. . Consideration of a recall in January is unlikely.

Onel Hernandez – Middlesbrough

Applications: 15

Objectives: 1

Seven starts in 15 league games for the Cuban winger and was denied a second Boro goal by an offside flag after playing for the final 16 minutes of a 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Going to a 3-5-2 since Chris Wilder arrived last month doesn’t seem to be helping the delicate 28-year-old’s prospects. Under contract in Norwich until 2023.

Jordan Hugill – West Brom

Applications: 19

Objectives: 1

Struggled to make an impact for the Baggies, starting seven of his 19 Championship appearances for the Promotion Hunters, with his only goal being a close range shot in a 3-0 home win over Bristol City in October . Valérien Ismael’s straightforward style seemed to suit the 29-year-old well, but received a lot of criticism from supporters. Under contract until 2023, after five goals in 34 appearances for City last season.

Sam McCallum – QPR

Applications: 8

Objectives: 2

He remained on loan at Coventry for 18 months to continue playing regularly and the 21-year-old had started eight of QPR’s last 11 league games before needing hamstring surgery last month. Hopes to return in January and is under contract at City until 2024, having only made one League Cup appearance so far. Has mainly been used as a left-back by his loan clubs.

Dan Adshead – Gillingham

Applications: 19

The Rochdale academy product had started 11 of his 15 Ligue 1 appearances and was bringing technical ability to the central midfielder of a struggling Gills side, but broke a bone in his foot at the end of the month last and underwent surgery. The length of the 20-year-old’s contract was not made public when he signed in 2019, spending last season as a regular Dutch Second Division player with Telstar. Previously, he won an England Under-19 cap alongside players including Bukayo Saka.

Four senior appearances got the forward a contract until 2024, but the loan to Swindon proved frustrating as the Robins plunged to relegation from League One. A start and three late cameos for Orient as the 19-year-old has spent much of his time on the Ligue 2 bench, starting four EFL Trophy games. The Os were only able to name four substitutes for their 1-0 loss at Tranmere on Saturday due to a Covid-19 outbreak with Omotoye not in the squad.

Sebastian Soto – Porto B

Applications: 8

The USA striker scored seven goals in 12 games in the Dutch second tier for Telstar in the first half of last season, but apparently failed to impress after joining City properly in January. Daniel Barden – Livingston

Applications: 1

Granted: 1

The 20-year-old’s four appearances for City last season have earned him two Wales Under-21 caps and a Scottish Premiership loan this season – only for a testicular cancer diagnosis to be a priority in September . A League Cup appearance and 10 as an unused substitute have forced the imposing keeper to be patient, but the focus is entirely on dealing with his ill health before considering whether the loan can be resumed. Under contract until 2024, with the possibility of an additional year.

Reece McAlear – Inverness CT

Objectives: 1
