The Bristol Press – Bristol Historical Society is accepting entries for the West Cemetery Lantern Tour

BRISTOL – The Bristol Historical Society is now accepting entries for the West Cemetery Lantern Tour, which returns September 30 and October 1 and will see actors portray famous Bristol residents of the past.

Lantern tours, sponsored by the Bristol Cemetery Commission and the Bristol Historical Society, will begin at 6.50pm, 7.30pm, 7.50pm, 8.10pm and 8.30pm on both nights. The actors will portray characters from Bristol’s past and share the stories of their lives near their resting places. Tour groups will follow a guide with a lantern, traveling through the cemetery on paths lit by glow sticks.

“For those who have not attended in previous years, during this evening guided walk through the West Cemetery you will be introduced to some notable ‘residents’ of the cemetery who will share some of their history with attendees,” said said Maya Bringe, president of the Bristol. Historical Society. “It’s an engaging way to spend an evening and learn a bit of Bristol’s history.”

Lantern tours return after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This year, professional external actors will play the historical figures. The guide will also be a famous figure from Bristol’s past.

“The guide will represent Epaphroditus Peck, who was the city’s historian in his time,” Bringe said. “He will provide more context to the stages of the tour, which will include people who were his contemporaries and others who were not. There may also be a family storyline that will have multiple players.

Peck was born in 1860 and died in 1938.

The rainy date for both days is October 2.

There will also be limited space for an earlier visit at 6pm, with motorized transport provided for those with limited mobility or who prefer a daytime option. These visits will be limited to 8 people per hour.

“If there is significant interest, an additional timeslot may be added,” added Bringe.

Donations are welcome from tour participants. The suggested donation is $10.
