Schenectady County Historical Society to Host Podcast Group – The Daily Gazette

Revisiting history is often fun and informative, but sometimes the past can get quite complicated. That’s why it’s always a good idea to brainstorm with a group of people who also find the story fascinating.

At the Schenectady County Historical Society, they’re still looking to the past, but instead of reading a good book this time around, they’re going to listen to podcasts. Curator Suzy Fout and Librarian/Archivist Marietta Carr offer a variety of topics to hold your interest over the coming months, and kicking off the SCHS Podcast Club this month will be “Socialism in America.”

“Similar to our book clubs, we’ll listen to a selection of podcasts and meet in person to discuss them,” Carr said. “Each month we focus on a different topic and choose podcasts that fit the theme. During our discussions we will explore the subject and look for connections to Schenectady and our local history.

In-person talks will take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month beginning with the topic of socialism, including four-time presidential candidate Eugene Debs and Schenectady Mayor George R. Lunn. As a county historian and author of a book on Lunn, I will be facilitating the first podcast discussion, which will be held Tuesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Historical Society at 32 Washington Ave.

The second podcast will focus on Black History and the in-person discussion will take place on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Historical Society. More hosts and topics will be announced in the coming weeks.

For more information on the podcasts and to reserve a spot for the Tuesday evening talks, also scheduled for March 22, April 26 and May 24, contact Carr at [email protected] or dial (518) 374-0263, option 3.
