Rome Historical Society’s ‘Griffiss Experience’ video series set to take off and share memories

The Historical Society of Rome has announced the release of a new video series called The Griffiss Experience. Throughout the year, the company will post four videos on YouTube, featuring community members and their memories of Griffiss Air Force Base.

The Rome Historical Society has been a partner of the Building Capacity, Creating Sustainability, Growing Accessibility initiative of the Museum Association of New York since January 2021.

Under this two-year program, participating museums strive to identify and present programs virtually from stories found in their collections that reveal the diversity of their communities.

Griffiss Air Force Base operated for over 50 years, saw some of the first African Americans and women in the armed forces, and brought diverse groups of people to the Rome area.

“The company collected the fading memories of Griffiss Air Force Base in recorded video interviews,” the organization said in its announcement for the new series.

The interviews, coupled with photos and documents from the HRH collection, have been organized into a series of short videos about how Griffiss Air Force Base continues to impact the community.

ERS staff intend to continue recording and collecting interviews for many years to come. If you want to share your story or learn more, call Miranda at 315-336-5870. You can watch, like and share the videos at or at

The Rome Historical Society, 200 Church St., has an array of historical artifacts, documents, and other records relating to Griffiss Air Force Base as well as the base’s precursor, the Rome Air Depot. For more information on the company’s museum or the agency itself, visit its website at www.
