OUR VIEWPOINT: A politician’s guide to undermining public education | Opinion

Suppose you were looking to divert money from public schools to private schools, how could you go about doing this?

You would probably start with scare tactics to weaken trust in public education.

You would warn parents that their children are being indoctrinated by leftist teachers or programs educating innocent school children on heretical theories.

You would muddy the waters redefining critical race theory and social emotion learning.

You would make sure that the most important lesson that could be taught about racial disparity is that no one should feel guilty.

You would tell parents that the mere availability of literature they might find objectionable in a public space would create a new generation of beatniks.

You would tell them that strategic public health actions meant that parental rights were being undermined.

You would pit parents against school boards, creating chaos, and then complain that public education is just too chaotic to support.

You would pit parents against teachers.

You would tell parents that public schools need very narrow definitions of tolerable religions.

You would tell parents that talking about gender is going to make their kids gay.

You would tell them that the only real option is private school.

You would want them to ignore that private school administrators are just as capable of mismanaging funds as public school administrators.

You would probably create a voucher system to fund private schools with tax dollars and call it “school choice.”

At least that’s what you would do if you were looking to divert money from public schools to private schools.
