Opinion: Volunteers, donations needed to the Rochester Historical Society

For the publisher:

Reading through numerous papers from East Rochester Church and the minutes of the first Rochester Historical Society which are kept in the museum, it becomes clear that although memberships to both groups came and went over the years, there always had a core group that kept things going. During the 2020-21 pandemic, the current Rochester Historical Society was reduced to this essential (sometimes very small) core.

Now that the world, the community, our society and our museum are reopening, we need our members, past, present and future, to join us again to keep both active. The Museum with its new exhibition is currently open on the second and fourth Sundays of June and July, as well as by appointment. We’ve also planned a few upcoming events.

The first is a garage sale on August 7. Donations can be dropped off at the Museum on Fridays in July, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Arrangements can be made for other drop-off times by calling 508-763-4932. We accept a large number of items, but not large electronics (smaller ones should work) or clothing. We will need a lot of volunteers for the day of the sale and August 4th and 5th to help with the setup.

Late September and early October will bring a new exhibit, “Curator’s Exhibit Part II”, along with a cranberry bake sale and other activities. The date will be announced later. We will resume our evenings from September 15 at 7:00 p.m. The program will be a “historic” Show ‘n Tell. Participants can bring an item or item to share or simply come and see what others have contributed. This will give us all the opportunity to reconnect and enjoy delicious refreshments. Our October 20 reunion will be board games and entertainment presented by Mack Phinney.

Hopefully in October and November we can come up with a good list of candidates for the November election at the Thanksgiving Supper and we are hopeful of an organ concert in December.
