Liverpool could face criticism from fans as Tottenham Hotspur push for Luis Diaz. Spurs’ offer isn’t exactly massive.
It looks like Liverpool might be missing Luis Diaz after all. There have been reports linking the two for some time, with Journal de Noticias claiming in November that the Reds like the Colombian.
Reports, mostly from Portugal, continued to grow from there and it looked like Liverpool could move on in January. Fabrizio Romano said earlier this month, for his part, that the club have scouted Diaz three times in 2021. They are also “serious” with their interest.
But there was a catch and it still is the same catch – money. Athletic have reported that Porto want Diaz’s full £67million release clause in order to sell. Liverpool, however, value the player at half that.
That’s why Tuesday’s news is remarkable. Sky Sports are one of several reports that Tottenham Hotspur want Diaz and are willing to pay £46million for him. They hope that will be enough to bring Porto down from their £50m price tag.
If true, Liverpool might end up looking silly.
Liverpool take the risk of Luis Diaz
So Liverpool are supposed to value Diaz highly and want him at the club. At the same time, they only value him at around £34million.
It looks like Porto will sell for just £16m more than that. Spurs certainly have that idea if they’re willing to give it a shot with a £46million offer which, presumably, should make the transfer possible.
If they are right, Liverpool will lose a ‘serious’ target of over £12m. That’s not exactly a lot of money for what Diaz could be.
The Colombian was joint-top scorer in the Copa America alongside Lionel Messi, which included a sensational goal against Argentina in the semi-finals. Diaz followed that up with 14 goals in 18 Primeira Liga games from the left wing. On paper, he’s a 25-year-old superstar. Liverpool seem to believe it’s true if they take it seriously.
But it also looks like £12million is enough to put them off. If Diaz does enough to be a star, the Reds will look incredibly stupid in that position.
Fans already seem nervous about this one. The criticism will only increase if Liverpool get it wrong.
