How a Murdoch hopes to save American democracy

A separate grouplaunched by Novogratz, enlisted philanthropists to each pledge 1% of their net worth to ‘protect democracy’ and said he had already raised $87 million towards a goal of $250 million in pledges. 2024.

Most of the proposed changes include some variation on ranked voting, a system that allows voters to select their preferred candidates in order. New York City used the system in its Democratic mayoral primary last year, to much media fanfare – a watershed moment for what had previously been an obscure cause promoted by a small, scattered group of activists.

Prior to that, the ranked pick proponents had picked up a few quieter wins. In Maine, voters pushed through a ballot initiative in 2016 to become the first state to allow the system in federal elections. Alaska followed in 2020 with a similar ballot initiative, and 51 cities across the country have adopted ranked choice in one form or another.

Supporters of preferential voting argue that it will make campaigns more civil, save money, reduce the polarization that plagues American politics and give voters more choice. And while data is still available on many of these claimspolls show that voters tend to like him.

One detractor was Sherrie Swensen, the county clerk of Salt Lake County, Utah, a state that has adopted preferential voting in municipal elections. Swensen, whose position includes overseeing elections, said the system was “very complex to implement” because it took weeks to figure out how to design new ballots.

Murdoch invests resources and much of his energy in Unite America, a collection of groups that support organizations, campaigns and candidates who support his reform goals. Unite America is meant to be a “cross-partisan” meeting place for donors and activists, she said. “It’s a bunch of people,” Murdoch added with a chuckle, “with a wide variety of reasonable opinions.”

Its executive director is Nick Troiano, a 32-year-old activist who ran for office as an independent in Pennsylvania at age 24. Troiano has recruited a team of tough bipartisan political operatives, hoping to develop a cadre of seasoned activists who can guide investments and advise ballot initiatives in the new states.
